We're Here!

So we didn't get the Sid thing but something way better came along.  About three weeks ago we moved to the Houston suburb where Matt grew up to live with and take care of an elderly deaf woman.  She is very agreeable and so is the new location.  All I can say is that so far we love it here.  Especially the house.  It's modern!!!  There are outlets in the bathroom so I can plug in my hair dryer.  Anyway, here is a video tour of the new casa.

Looks great! But I want more details about the arrangment. Are you living rent free? How much care do you really have to do?

Good questions, Taylor. We get free rent, no utilities and a salary for living with this elderly woman. My job is to make sure she takes her morning and night meds, and do all the cooking, cleaning, and shopping. So it's actually not much different than what I was doing before except now I get paid. It is a lot like having another child, though, since the lady requires as much attention. For that reason Ian has been acting out a bit, as he did when Lily first came along.

Hats off to you Erin. I have a hard enough time managing my one kid. But it sounds like a very good way to save money. Do you guys have to hire a "sitter" for her if you want to go on vacation?

one more thing: how did you hear about the opportunity? sorry for all the questions but for some reason right now I am very interested in the ways people save money. hmph!

Again, good questions, Taylor. Actually we worked out from the beginning how many days off a year we will get. We negotiated every Saturday off and 25 vacation days a year in addition. Based on that we came up with an amount that we get every month weather we take any vacation time or not that month. The daughter of the lady we live with lives around the corner so she is available to help out. Marjie can be left alone for 1-2 hours but more than that, someone needs to be with her. So either her daughter will be with her or they hire someone from the ward to fill in. Also, we found this opportunity through long time family friends. After they moved their mother to Houston a year ago they tried to get us to live with her but we said "no". After we got rejected from the RA, and they sweetened the deal with a salary, we gave it serious consideration. It became clear to us that this was the opportunity we had been praying for, for the last 9 months. We tried a number of ways to generate extra income but we wanted something more consistent. This is really the ticket and so far we love it and feel greatly blessed!!
